I have just spent a while responding to a question on a forum, it must have touched a nerve because I spent over 1 and a half hours writing this out.. is it too much do you think?
here’s the question..
So how would you go about promoting the business online without vast sums of money & technical expertise (i.e. doing blogs, building websites etc…etc…)?
I am looking to get things moving quickly but don’t have the time to go standing on street corners or building complexed websites etc…etc…
and here’s the answer…
It’s a common question, how to move things quickly. It’s one of the questions I get asked all the time…
I get asked questions like this a lot..
1.) “I’ve got 1500 quid in my savings account, whats the best way to spend it to get success quickly?”
2.)“I don’t know how to make a website, do you think it’s a good idea for me to make one so I can get successful?”
3.)“I don’t like talking to people, should I start doing door to door?”
4.)“what is the single best way to promote quickly?”
and so on…
Answers..
1.) if you haven’t learnt how to sign someone up for free then you’re never gonna get 10 in a week no matter how much money you throw at it.
Start at step 1 and that’s getting an affiliate from either talking to them, sending them an email, sending them a dvd, bring up the subject at work/the pub/the gym/the staff party etc etc.
step2. do that again with more people until you’re playing for free.
step3. use your story to tell more people, tell them with your mouth or email or flyer or poster in the shop.
soon you will start to see what works and what doesn’t, once you find a way that works then put your money into that. You see, you have to have a working method before you start throwing money at it. You can only get a working method by trying different things and seeing for yourself what works for YOU.
If all you can do is put money into something then the only people that will be successful in your team will be those that can also spend money and lets face it, most people get interested in working from home because they haven’t got money to spend!
Imagine if I offered you 10,000 quid if you could get 6 affiliates in the next week… do you think you could do it? You’d probably have a damn good go right? Thing is, if you could get 6 affiliates, they might be worth a lot more to you than 10,000 quid in your lifetime. Think of your elottery business like that, just 6 committed people could earn you a retirement.
2.)If you can’t make a website, how can you dream of being successful by having an all bells and whistles multi-page site?.
Start at the beginning, there are a gazillion free sources out there that will give you a free website, all you have to do is fill it with stuff. Get a blog from blogger.com or myspace or buy some hosting for 30 quid that has a blog already. Spend some time putting your own thoughts on there, invest some time in yourself (unless you don’t think you are worth it). When you see a website that gets tons of visitors and signups, remember that it didn’t start that way. It probably started as a very simple site and over the time from it starting to you seeing it - it grew organically, the webmaster found new things to put on it, removed other things that didn’t work and so on.
So sure, it’s a good idea to have a website but have one that you can handle now and that means having a simple one and learn your way into a more complex one over time.
You shouldn’t dream of building a wonderous cathedral if you haven’t already got some experience by building a shed, then a garage, and then a house….
imagine if you’d started a very simple blog when you started in this business, right now you would probably still have a simple blog but it will be filled with all your thoughts and experiences and it’s a given that you would have learned an awful lot by doing it. And you’d be ready to move it up a notch and add some more things.
3.)Again, do what you are capable of doing. If you can’t swim, don’t plan on swimming the channel. If you are scared of flying then you’re not gonna be a pilot no matter how much you pay for lessons (unless you get over your fear).
Start small, talk to your warm market. Everyone says it, not because it’s a guaranteed signup but because it gives you practice without you getting all nervous. It gives you experience and confidence.
4.)If there was a single best way then everyone would do it and it wouldn’t be the best way any more. The best way for YOU to promote is doing things that YOU have found to be successful and you can’t find them until YOU start actually doing things and find out for yourself. Pick any tips on here or on the vwd site and try them out, if you can’t do them - try something else and keep doing it until you get a sign of success.

I am looking to get things moving quickly but don’t have the time to go standing on street corners |
Imagine if you have 2 children the same age, one child (lets call him Child 1) has just started university, all he has to do is 4 years of study, improving himself, learning and applying his knowledge. After 4 years he can go out and look for a job that should pay a decent wage, he’s not gonna be rich as soon as he gets it because he hasn’t got real world experience, all his degree will get him is a foot in the door and then he’ll need to start at the bottom before moving up a level and continuing to do that until he does earn a decent wage. It’s a life time thing. Is there a quick way to get the end results? nope.
Now, Child 2 is the same age but decides to start with his elottery business instead of university. He, just like child 1 starts a learning journey, improves himself, gets some experience. Learns that life wont give him what he wants but that he needs to take it. After a year of trying things and finding out which ones work he will have real experience to share with his members, another year of showing his team what he did and teaching them how to teach others and he’ll have a bigger team. 1 more year of doing what he’s done over the past 2 years will grow his team (and income) even more.
after 4 years, he will have a very large organisation and by the time his brother qualifies with a degree, he will already have his decent wage and secure future.
is there a way to get that quickly? nope.
both cases require action today, tomorrow and continuing action for at least 4 years. What advice would you give them if they came up to you after 6 months or a year and asked, “I want this quickly! how do I get it?”
You’d have to tell them, “don’t give up, keep doing what you are doing and learn your study/business. Have patience and a bit of faith, it will come”
and then you’d hope that they would carry on, keep trying, keep learning.
funny thing is, after 4 years both children will say “boy, that was quick! didn’t time fly? I’m so glad I stuck with it, thanks dad!”

If you haven’t got technical experience or knowledge of web wizardry then you’ll either have to go and learn it or otherwise, every hour you spend fruitlessly in front of your computer scratching your head could be better spent out standing on street corners, giving out leaflets, doing door to door or talking to people.
MLM requires skills to be successful, technical or sociable - it doesn’t matter, what matters is that you need to learn those skills to succeed. You can only get these skills by practising them and each time you do something, you will get better at it. It’s that simple. It’s a learning curve, once you get to a point where you know you can do it, you’ll be able to do it more.
Don’t be disheartend when you see people like Rik Law getting tons of signups, or Ian Burrows being top of the recruitment charts. they didn’t get there overnight, they have experience of MLM or building a successful website or building a list, the point is - they started at the beginning with whatever it was that taught them how to do this business. Ask any of them if there is a quick way to get what they have got and I’m sure they’ll all say the same thing, “no, you need to start at the beginning and talk to people”.
long story short?
get off your butt and go and do something, if it doesn’t work then try something else. If it does work - do it more!! the important thing is to at least try and to try for longer than a week or a month, do it consistently and persistently until you succeed.
ask any parent of a small child how long they are willing to let their child try to walk before giving up… 1 year? 2 years?. They never give up, the child continues to try and try, sometimes they fall over and bang their bum or head but they never give up, they keep trying until they are successful in their goal.
it’s no wonder that almost everyone can walk by the time they’re 3 or 4 years old!
Good luck Mike, give it some time and effort. learn from your experiences and apply it to new ones and it will only be a matter of time before you see what works and what doesn’t.
I look forward to you coming on here in a years time shouting how you have got to executive affiliate or how nice your new car is!
Andy.
"I bargained with Life for a penny, And Life would pay no more, However I begged at evening When I counted my scanty store. For Life is a just employer, He gives you what you ask, But once you have set the wages, Why, you must bear the task. I worked for a menial’s hire, Only to learn, dismayed, That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have willingly paid."
